Scorecard

For the Commonwealth - For the Nation

Why We Need a Scorecard

The purpose of a political scorecard is to objectively evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, policy positions, and backgrounds of our elected officials. The actions and voting records of our representatives provide a reliable metric for determining whether they truly represent our values and deserve our vote.

Unlike politicians who rely on speeches and promises, official records offer concrete evidence of performance. For example, a School Board Director who supports a 5.4% tax increase to fund programs that deliver no measurable improvement in the district’s academic standing raises important questions about priorities and results. Voters must carefully weigh these records. If you are running for office yourself, maintaining a consistent, fact-based platform is essential to becoming an effective representative.

Key factors to consider include:

  • Voting records of legislative candidates
  • Judicial philosophies and rulings of judges
  • Full backgrounds, including experience, funding sources, and past positions

Important lessons from recent cycles: Individuals with a pattern of dishonesty, instability, or poor judgment are poor choices for public office. Ultimately, it is the voter’s responsibility to do the homework and select the candidate best equipped to represent them.

The Republican Party strongly supports the primary system, empowering citizens and rank-and-file voters to choose nominees. In contrast, the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination process has often been influenced more by party elites and insiders than by grassroots voters.

A word of caution: Be wary of fake or misleading “scorecard” sites designed to spread disinformation. Stick to established organizations with transparent methodologies and a track record of accuracy. Efforts to distort facts and poison public discourse are common, especially from extreme partisan sources—so cross-reference multiple trusted references whenever possible.

Just to make a point of why we use scorecards – you can compare water in a country I visited versus water seen at the New Jersey shore. Never in my life have I seen clear water by the Jersey shore, but in this country that is a few thousand years old, the people value and protect the resource.

I toured 8 cities and the country water was clean. The water and intentional upkeep here, we can all do better. The scorecard is not only an assessment of officials, but also a call for all of us to contribute to make our homes and communities better, and prevent parasites from invading and destroying our areas.
